The Movement Toward Resilient Futures: A Report Card

In 1998 the movement toward resilient futures began in Australia with a range of presentations and projects that were aligned to this thinking, but very new to the participants. After a soft beginning, in 2004 it spread to the USA and into Rhode Island where it began to take flight with several ground-breaking projects, some of which have prolonged and some at present, inactive.

In 2007 the Resilient Futures Network was established with small beginnings, with projects, partners, practitioners and pro-activists emerging to globalize the call for a move toward resilient futures.

Multidisciplinary Focus:

Resilient Rhode Island, USA:

  • Rhode Island Economic Development Plan: Facilitation and advice on an integrated, whole systems economic development plan for the State of Rhode Island, USA - RI Dept. of Planning. 
  • Tri-communities – Working with a group of stakeholders from cities of Pawtucket and Central Falls as well as the Town of Cumberland, the Resilient Communities Process has been used to develop a Resilience Platform centered around the theme of empowering immigrant entrepreneurs and creating resilient urban development.
  • City of Cranston – Economic Development Strategy: Creating a platform for Resilient 21st Century Economic Development Model informed by the whole systems thinking.
  • Smithfield - New Villages Project - Revitalization of five existing villages and creation of two new villages in Smithfield, designed and developed to be an exemplar of resilient communities - Town of Smithfield, Rhode Island, USA, and Schochet Associates, Developers from Boston, Mass, USA.
  • Blackstone Valley Partnership (RI and Massachusetts) – The development of a Resilient Regional Partnership for the Blackstone Valley to encourage better design and development practices that are consistent with the guiding principles established using the Resilience process. The partnership will look to provide technical support, leadership training and guidance to local communities in the Valley.
  • Blackstone Alert – In response to the substantial impacts from the flooding in October, 2005, a broad group of stakeholders are using the Resilience process to evaluate what happened in 2005, what were the impacts and how might the valley avoid similar impacts when rain events of similar of increased magnitude strike.
  • Resilient Tourism Lab – How can communities that rely heavily on tourism for their economy continue to grow and enhance tourism while still maintaining a resilient community? The Resilient Tourism Laboratory was created by the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council in partnership with the Resilient Futures Network to educate and engage the Tourism industry in a move toward resilience thinking.
  • Resilient RI: This is an all-encompassing Resilient Network development initiative that seeks to link the various projects, practitioners and players through teaching and project engagement.
  • Primers delivered: Town of Westerly, AICP workshop-Providence, RI., Mystic, CT., Civic Tourism Conference, RI.
  • Pro-activist network established.

Resilient Victoria (Australia):

  • Resilient Dairy Industry - Advising and coaching CSIRO project leadership in the formulation and implementation of a resilience strategy for the Australian dairy industry - Dairy Australia and CSIRO.
  • The FutureFuels Network – Creation of a network of the gas and allied industries to respond to oil shortages and cost rises, reduction of carbon emissions, design innovation for 21st century motor vehicle fuel supply, reduction of transport costs and emergence of a new industry and the consequential economic development opportunities – various partners.
  • Pro-activist network being established.

Resilient Western Australia:

  • Resilient WA: A bold initiative lead by the WA Resilient Futures Network to align a series of existing resilience projects and new pilots. The campaign for a resilient WA is designed to combine the pilot and projects at scale and to embed and promote resilience and resilient thinking across Western Australia and to connect individual practitioners as part of the wider Resilient Futures Network. – WA Resilient Futures Network and Partners.
  • Adaptive CentraCare – Formulation of a resilient organization strategy. As an attempt to break free from the current funding structures and resulting constraints in regards to service delivery, the organization is placing the client at the centre of the model and developing a resilience-based structure which will enable the organization to adapt its services and support to the meet the specific needs of each individual. – CentraCare.
  • Armadale Community Conditions Analysis – Community driven project to discover the immediate and emergent conditions impacting the Armadale region in Western Australia. From this work will come a cohesive, community-wide context for resilient decision-making and capability development. The conditions analysis will underpin a multiple bottom-line view of sustainability. – Armadale Redevelopment Authority, Western Australia.
  • Wanneroo: Resilient Economic Development – As the fastest growing region in Australia, Wanneroo is committed to ensuring that with growth comes appropriate economic development opportunities for the community. Using the Resilient Future framework and process the City is developing a number of economic development pilots which can be scaled into a regional strategy and framework. – City of Wanneroo, Western Australia
  • Planning for Growth. Climate Change? Water? - Strategy Forum bringing together over fifty senior decision makers from industry, community and government to begin to frame a resilience-based response to issues of growth, climate change and water – in partnership with City of South Perth, Western Australia.
  • Youth for Resilient Futures – The development of a resilience-based youth leadership and engagement strategy for the Youth Advisory Council for the City of South Perth. The aim is for young people to have a real voice in regards to issues that matter to them and to be taken seriously as leaders within their community. – City of South Perth
